Real time monitoring of ocean ambient noise in Indian seas

June 25 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

An autonomous passive acoustic measurement system with real time transmission, has been developed for shallow water applications and operated in the open ocean at different sites off the Indian coast. Time series measurements covering different seasons , have been made at these sites and the system has proved its stability by being operational during severe cyclones such as Vardah that crossed the Chennai coast in December 2015.  The data sets have been analysed with respect to  oceanographic, bio acoustic and geoacoustic applications apart from Naval applications.  The studies have thrown light on the effect of anthropogenic noise on marine species .  Now efforts are being made to make the passive system with vector sensor array replacing the vertical linear array of hydrophones.
