IEEE Transportation Electricification Initiative and Conference

Monday, May 14th, 2012

On March 4 – 8, in Greenville, South Carolina, the 2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference, IEVC was held with over 646 international Registrants.  This multi IEEE society conference came together to firmly establish the IEEE as a force in the new world of transportation electrification. Keynotes from several society Presidents included IEEE, SAE International and the Electric Drive Transportation Association, EDTA.  To learn more about the IEVC, please view the overview video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tANYyMzFkfU&feature=youtu.be. IEEE President Gordon Day’s keynote video and other keynotes / panel discussions are at http://ieeeusa.org/calendar/conferences/ievc/default.asp.

The IEEE Transportation Electrification Initiative has been established to make it easy for those outside of the IEEE to connect with the large number of IEEE societies, councils, committees, standards and people that are actively involved in the electrification of transportation.  Given that electric vehicle technology covers so much of the IEEE and that this technology will be a game changer for the world, the Initiative will help promote the concentration of discussion and rapid development of IEEE resources for this new mode of transportation.

The first development by the Initiative is the creation of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Web Portal at http://electricvehicle.ieee.org/

This web portal will not only promote easy access to IEEE resources through a specially designed custom search and timely industry information, it will support on going discussions through:

Linkedin at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/IEEE-Clean-Transportation-3049403

Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/IeeeTransportationElectrification

And Twitter at http://twitter.com/intent/follow?source=followbutton&variant=1.0&screen_name=IEEEEV

All IEEE organizations are encouraged to contribute articles, discussions and comments across all of these channels.  And also to post details about electric vehicle events, meetings, conferences and developments.  One of the main Initiative goals is to promote what IEEE members are doing and with this input, we will help connect them with the people and opportunities that will made them successful.

The Initiative is actively reaching out to others that are involved in electric vehicles.  To date IEEE have exhibited and made presentations at the SAE World Congress and the EDTA EVS26.  In June the Initiative will help lead a visit to Capital Hill to ensure that key Congressional Representatives know of the important electric vehicle work that the IEEE is doing.  And it is building a database of contacts outside of the IEEE to help with promotion of IEEE activities and services in this arena.

The 2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo, ITEC, will be on June 18 – 20 in Dearborn, MI.  Registration is now open. All people and companies involved in electrified transportation  are invited to register for ITEC.  More information on ITEC can be found at http://itec-conf.com/.

IEEE President’s Change the World Competition

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

IEEE President’s Change the World Competition started in 2009 as part of the IEEE 125th anniversary celebration.  The competition recognizes students who develop unique solutions to real-world problems using engineering, science, computing, and leadership skills to benefit their community and humanity. Over the course of several months, teams submit entries identifying a real world problem and how their project will offer a solution which positively impacts humanity. Winners will receive awards ranging from the grand prize of US$10,000 and the distinction of being named “IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme,” to runner-up prizes of US$5,000, US$2,500, and US$1,000. Winners of the grand prize will also be invited to accept their awards in-person at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in June 2012. More information on eligibility, rules, promotional material, and a link to registration are available. Registration will close 31 January 2012.

Sections Congress Recommendations

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

The following are the top five recommendations voted by the Primary Section Delegates at the IEEE Sections Congress 2011 during the closing ceremony on Monday, 22 August.

  1. IEEE to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy to increase the number of next generation youth pursuing science and engineering careers.
  2. As members maintain their IEEE membership over their years, IEEE must reward them for their loyalty. Rewards ought to be tangible and useful and can be done simply and inexpensively. Create Global Fidelity Programs including: (a) Continue membership Recognition 5-10-15-20 years of membership (b) Bonus for specific Benefits (e.g., reduced fee, IEEE merchandise, etc).
  3. IEEE membership (including e-Membership) should include a Society membership as part of the basic membership fee.
  4. Increased support to students in technical activities with grants to attend conferences and organization of technical competitions.
  5. To encourage interest in pre-university students in engineering careers, IEEE to publish a subscription periodical (paper or electronic) targeted to high school students that highlights engineering activities of interest to those students. The periodical should also have articles promoting the benefits of an engineering career and what the students can do in college to get involved with IEEE.

IEEE Day Celebration is 6 October 2011

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

6 October 2011 marks the second annual IEEE Day.  This year’s theme is Empowering Members to Create the Future, and IEEE organizational units (Regions, Sections, Chapters, Affinity Groups, Student Branches, etc.) are encouraged to participate by providing local events for their members and encouraging the use of social networking to communicate members’ technological achievements, interests, and successes. IEEE Day is on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and LinkedIn.  The first IEEE Day was held 7 – 8 October 2010, in recognition of IEEE members — past, present, and future — on the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.
