A special Orientation program and Visit to Urban health Center

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society(EMBS) MSRIT student chapter has been undertaking several activities to improve the health care delivery and services. With the support from Dept of Community Medicine, M.S.Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, an endeavor to bridge the gap between the engineering and health care systems is under way. The objective is to enable better health through ICT- an endeavor to address critical gap in healthcare, delivering through modern IT technology. Through this , the chapter wish to establish cost effective primary healthcare services in the villages keeping in mind their adaptive abilities.

Towards this end,  an interactive session with the health care counterparts to understand the nuances of the health care delivery and arrive at potential areas of ICT development was held on 16th November at MSRIT campus Bangalore. 33 EMBS MSRIT students attended this session

Schedule of activities on 16th November

Session I: Overview of health care delivery system in India- Public and Private sector

Session II: visit to an urban health centre :Cholanayakahalli Urban Health Centre  8 km from MSRIT

Session III: Debriefing session: Group presentations and consensual areas of ICT development

Dr Shalini Chandrasekhar Nooyi, Professor dept of Community medicine, M.S.Ramiah Medical College  delivered a talk on “History of medicine & its evolution’, ‘Healthcare system in India’ and ‘Modern Healthcare’ which gave an insight to the participants before the actual visit to the Primary Healthcare Centre. Dr. Nandakumar, Head of Research and Patents at  M.S.Ramaiah Academy of Health and Applied sciences, who helped in organizing this event, briefed the participants as to what they should be doing during the visit and its importance.

At the Primary Healthcare Centre, the participants were divided into three groups and were instructed to observe the working of the centre, problems faced by patients and staff, negatives and positives of the healthcare system.

After the visit, the observations made by each group were presented by them along with possible solutions to problems.

The camp was an eye opener to the realities to the present status of primary healthcare in India. The participants will be further working with their group to address some of problems mentioned above.
