The IEEE EMBS MSRIT Chapter, IEEE EMB Bangalore chapter in association with M.S.Ramaiah Institute of Technology Bangalore, organized a DLP on” Cardiac Pulmonary Ressuscitation” on 16th December, 2017 at the ESB board, MSRIT campus. The session was open to the students and faculty.

The talk by Dr.TapasMondal , a pioneer pediatric cardiologist from Hamilton Canada began at 12:30pm about how CPR is the most common first aid that needs to be known to everyone.

  • About the speaker.

Dr.TapasMondal completed his pediatric training in India. He then moved to UK where he further completed his training in pediatric cardiology. He finished his fellowship in Canada and began a faculty position as an assistant professor in the department of paediatrics in Toronto. Dr.Mondal is primarily a clinician educator with a research interest in fetal medicine and the development of the heart. In 2009 Dr.Mondal was honoured with the best teacher award from the McMaster Univerisity and was promoted to assiociate professor in 2010. He has got several publications to his credit.

  • Key points of the talk.
  1. CPS- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is one of the most commonly used first aid when the victim suddenly collapses or in undergoing a cardiac arrest.
  2. CPR begins at home.CPR may be required at unexpected places and it wil help save lives.
  3. There is a difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack. a cardiac arrest is when the heart stops or the person is gasping for breathe or not breathing at all , often as a result of a heart attack.
  4. In such cases he described the following measures or steps to be followed in order for us to save the victim.
  • Steps to be followed while performing a CPR
  1. Call for help .
  2. Put the patient or the victim from a bed or a mattress or a table onto the floor. The reason why CPR is not to be performed on a table is because tgere will be a counter pressure of the pressure we put on the chest leaving the CPR not of any usage.
  3. Kneel as close as possible to the patient. Leaving a three finger gap from the abdominal diaphragm , lock you dominant palm onto your non dominant hand and place it on the centre of the chest. The reason why it is placed no the centre of the chest is because the heart is only tilted to the left and the major portion of the heart is at the centre
  4. Now start applying pressure continuously until a certain count say 100, after which another person can take over.

He also demonstrated the proper way and the proper position in which this procedure is to be performed.

Not a lot of people who know about this procedure too step forward during times of requirement due to the following reasons:

-Fear and hesitation

-May cause harm to the person.

Thus , the message of performing a CPR must be given to all the people of all age groups such that when there is a situation where in this is necessary , it can be performed, saving many lives.

  • Summary .

In some developing or underdeveloped countries, people think that a CPR can only be performed by a doctor in the hospitals as it is the standard of practice that they follow. The first couple of minutes when the patient encounters the cardiac arrest , the first aid and also the attention that the patient is given has aa major impact on the survival rate of the person. A cardia arrest can occur at any time to a person and it is mostly when the person is out of the hospital. Thus a bystander is very important for the survival of the victim.
