Since the dawn of the commercial airline industry, the accuracy of tracking aircraft has steadily increased with progresses in technology. However, even with modern day tracking systems such as GPS and ground radar, there are still large voids around the globe where accuracy is diminished due to low coverage. Commercial planes must fly longer routes to accommodate for these areas, which translates into higher ticket prices and longer flight durations.
Harris is currently working on a solution to this problem: a fleet of phased array antennas that will orbit the earth and provide coverage in the areas that are currently lacking. In this presentation we will cover how the classes you are taking now and will take in the future can prepare you to work on projects like these. We will also cover how the many different disciplines of engineering must come together to make a project like this successful.
This is a summary of Harris’ presentation for the Feb. 4 Tech Talks.
Members and those still interested in getting involved with IEEE:
We will be having a meeting this Wednesday, September 25th, from 5:30 – 6:30 PM in Dreese 267. Please try to make this meeting, as we will be delegating many responsibilities for upcoming events such as the fall social planning and the lecture series. We will also be discussing other aspects such as current finances and new leadership roles.
Join IEEE along with Charles Middleton from Harris Corp, Professor Joel Johnson, and student researchers to hear their perspectives on the electromagnetics specialization within ECE!
When: Tuesday, Sep 17th, 5:30 to 7:00pm
Where: Dreese Lab #305
+ Pizza and drinks will be provided.
Our first general meeting of the semester will be held on WEDNESDAY, SEPT 4th @ 5:30PM in DL267.
This is be a great time to hear about IEEE OSU, get involved with the various activities of the semester, and enjoy some pizza with your peers!
Everyone is invited, and we look forward to seeing you there!
