On Tuesday the 13th of March, a Lunch Lecture on Photonic Integration was held by Prof. Dr. Ir. Meint Smit. He talked about the highlights and trends in Photonic Integration, the renaming of his department at Electrical Engineering to Photonic Integration and his research which won him an European Advanced Grant. The Lecture was received with great interest and enjoyment. For an impression of the event, an image gallery has been added below.

On the 15th of February, the yearly careerday took place, this year with the companies TenneT, ASML and USG Innotiv. The event took place in the Senaatszaal and was divided in a morning of technical presentations by TenneT and ASML and a career themed afternoon.

The expectations of the Board were fulfilled and it was a great day: Especially the PPA (Personal Profile Analysis) workshop was a great addition to the careerday. It gave students more insight in what kind of person they are, and what kind of jobs would fit them best. The Board would like to thank all participants of the Careerday 2012 for their active participation in the lectures and workshop. We would also like to thank Tennet, ASML and USG Innotiv for their coöperation with us and hope we can support each others future endeavours.

This wednesday the annual New Years Dinner took place. With 25 participants it was a crowded evening, but nonetheless a very succesful evening. It was very nice to have international students and Former Active IEEE Members at the dinner, we hope everyone else had a good time as well.

In November last week, 6 people joined the Board of the IEEE SBE on a trip to an XXL Restaurant in Germany, just across the border from Roermond. This trip included a bus ride to and from the location and a dinner with really oversized food and drinks. The evening was a success and all contestants enjoyed it, however there was no one who could finish the entire meal.

Last week, the international 24-hour IEEE Programming competition took place, and the Student Branch Eindhoven participated with 4 of our own teams. Our counselor, Frans Willems, made sure there was no co-operation between teams and the Board made sure there was enough to eat / drink during the 24 hours.

Our teams ended up at the 400 – 500th place out of 1472 teams, which is not a bad result at all. Next year the Board wishes to prepare the participating teams better before the programming competition. At the start of the competition it took some time to get used to the software environment and this is a critical point to address in the next competition. All in all it was a succesful activity and next time we aspire to perform even better.

On October 3rd, the advanced LaTeX course was given by PhD student Mark Mutsaers. There were 25 people who attended the course and it had been a while since the last advanced course was given as opposed to the beginners course. Not only did the attendees learn more about writing a professional paper, but they also got a sneak peek at creating presentations with LaTex. All in all, the course was a success.
