In a 24hour challenge that commenced 11am Saturday the 14th of October, 10 UOW teams participated in the 2017 IEEEXtreme competition (combining problem solving and coding). This event was organised locally by the UOW IEEE Student Branch with 3350 teams competing from around the world. A big thank you to Asanga Jayawardana (branch chair) and the branch committee for making this event happen.
Additional people to thank for their support, time and commitment include Jiangtao Xi, Willy Susilo, Peter Vial, Maree Burton, Lorelle Pollard, Faisel Tubbal, Yasmeen Panhwar, Alanna Vial, Maryam Haseeb, Prabha Ariyaratna, Mohamed Madni and Subir Majumder.
The UOW team ‘Semicolon’ came first in Australia with 2203 points (in distant second was Monash university with 1594 points). This team also placed 32nd in the world, an outstanding achievement in itself and even more so because they were only first-year students. First place in the world was a team from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne with 2595 points.
Country and world rankings for all ten UOW teams.
