  1. Significant Accomplishments:

 

 Organizing a tour of SUNY ETEC campus:

This tour provided participants with a unique opportunity to see first-hand the cutting-edge facilities and ongoing research projects in power and energy systems, artificial intelligence, center for red teaming, and NYS MESONET. By engaging these advancements and innovations, the IEEE PES chapter contributes to the dissemination of knowledge and helps raise awareness of the latest developments in the field. Such tours can inspire new ideas and collaborations among participants within the power and energy systems community.

Hosting a joint hybrid session on Digital Humanities:

The interdisciplinary nature of this session highlights the importance of collaboration and the integration of diverse perspectives in advancing the field of power and energy systems. By working with the IEEE Schenectady Section, and IEEE Northwest Florida Section Chap and C16/COM19, the PES chapter demonstrates its commitment to fostering innovative approaches and cross-disciplinary research. The focus on Digital Humanities also underscores the increasing importance of understanding the human and social dimensions of technology development. Overall, this session represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing the complex challenges of the industry and helps the PES community to think differently about their existing problems.

PES Members Benefits: Opportunities for professional development and skill enhancement through engaging webinars, such as those on EV Charger Testing methods (Webinar in conjunction with IEEE IAS Schenectady chapter and DNV), EV Charge points (Webinar with experts from Lynkwell)), digital twins for sustainable power systems (Webinar with Typhoon HIL experts), and Advanced Prediction Techniques (Webinar with HK Polytechnic University experts).

Networking opportunities: Participating in events like the joint hybrid session on Digital Humanities with IEEE Northwest Florida Section Chap, C16/COM19 and webinars featuring experts from organizations such as Lynkwell, DNV, Typhoon, and professors at leading universities like SUNY, RPI and HK Polytechnic provides a platform to connect with professionals, experts, and peers in the industry.

Leadership development: As a volunteer involved in organizing and facilitating webinars and sessions, one can develop and refine their leadership, organizational, and teamwork skills.

 

 

  1. Coordination with Other Entities (PES Committees, CIGRE, standards, etc.):

 

Joint hybrid session on Digital Humanities with IEEE Northwest Florida Section Chap, C16/COM19: This event exemplifies our coordination with other IEEE chapters, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and exploring the intersection of power and energy systems with digital humanities.

 

Webinar with Lynkwell on V2G standards and interoperability challenges: Our collaboration with Lynkwell, an EV charge point operator, and charging solutions provider for the electric vehicle industry, brought together experts to discuss Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) standards, specifically ISO 15118, and the challenges surrounding interoperability in the EV Industry.

 

 

  1. New Technologies of Interest to the Committee:

 

  • Advanced Energy Storage Technologies: Hydrogen, Li-Battery

 

  • AI and Machine Learning for Grid Optimization

 

  • Offshore Wind Power

 

  • Digital Worker

 

  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Integration and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) Technologies

 

 

  1. Problems and Concerns:

Challenges with in-person engagement and attendance. Virtual events have garnered more participation.

Good resources within the community but challenges in identifying potential partnerships.

 

  1. Significant Plans for the Next Period: 

As we look ahead to next year, our focus is on growing our member base and bringing in experts that can shed light on new technologies. We are also coordinating facility tours of cutting-edge companies in the Tri-city area. These tours will enable participants to witness firsthand the latest advancements in electric vehicle charging solutions, li-battery technology, smart electrical facilities, and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

“MY 33+ YEAR TECHNICAL CAREER AT GE” – May 25th, 2022 – Dr.Manoj Shah

This presentation gave a “flying” tour of what Dr. Shah had been involved in over the last 34 years with GE in its various businesses and at its Global Research Center. He summarized all his work that is available in the public domain, mainly with the US Patent Office and IEEE Xplore. It covered his work in electrical devices such as bus work, circuit breakers as well as in the M & D area. The main focus was on various types of electrical machines ranging in temperature from 77° K (-196° C) to >300°, from 1 to 300 bars, from a few kW to > 1 GW, from 10 RPM to 30,000 RPM, from ~100’s of Volts to 27 kV, and so on! The application space ranges from Aviation to Defense to Power Generation to Water to O&G to Transportation!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Manoj Shah, Life Fellow of IEEE, received his B.Tech. (Honors) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. He received MS and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He recently retired as a Principle Engineer from GE’s Global Research Center after almost 34 years with GE! He spent his career working on electrical devices with the main focus on electric machines. He has ~70 US and many foreign patents with several pending. He has also authored/co-authored over 45 technical papers; some of them have been prize papers. He has given many invited talks internationally. He has been active in the Electric Machines area for IEEE in various capacities and is a past chair of our Schenectady section. He received the 2015 IEEE Gerald Kliman award, the 2012 GE-GRC Coolidge Fellowship award and the 2012 IEEE Nikola Tesla award. He is now open to work as a consultant. 🙂
