Drone Sensor Technologies and Issues

December 4 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Speaker: Michael McDonald, Founder, Skylane Technologies Ventures  www.linkedin.com/in/mcdonaldmichael

Speaker bio: Michael McDonald recently left Toshiba Semiconductors, where he was leading their “Office of the CTO” organization.  An avid pilot and aircraft owner, he has nearly 1000 hours of flight time and has flown over 100 missions for Angel Flight West, a non-profit organization that takes people with serious, non-urgent medical conditions between remote locations and specialist doctors to receive the lifesaving care they need. Prior to Toshiba, he worked with Vislab, a startup that successfully completed the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenges; they also created four autonomous vehicle that travelled 16000 km – ~10k miles – along the Marco Polo Silk Road from Parma Italy to Shanghai China in 2010, the same year that Google first announced they were working on self-driving cars. Vislab was acquired by Ambarella in 2015. He has a BSEE from Rice University and has been involved with advanced technologies and Silicon Valley’s leading technology companies for nearly 30 years.

Abstract: What do Uber, Airbus, Larry Page, Amazon, Chipotle’s, UPS and Domino’s all have in common? They are planning on air taxis, flying cars, flying burritos, and drone deliveries landing and taking off at a place near you in the next few years … and they are committing hundreds of millions of dollars to make it happen!  A shortage of pilots and a desire to create more revenue generation opportunities means most of these programs are targeting autonomous aircraft, and, for a variety of reasons, they are targeting battery-powered flights.  Full autonomy on battery power! Join us as our speaker discusses this exciting emerging market and explores some of the differences and challenges between ground, drone, and general aviation in terms of sensor, communication, and navigation technologies.
