  • About IEEE CS SCV

The IEEE Computer Society of Silicon Valley is the largest Chapter in the area. We operate as part of the global IEEE Computer Society, which with nearly 85,000 members, is the world’s leading organization of computing professionals. IEEE CS was founded in 1946, and is the largest of the IEEE’s 38 societies. The Computer Society is dedicated to advancing the theory and application of computing and information technology.
Our Santa Clara Valley Chapter emphasizes all aspects of computing to our local members, and we welcome visitors. We organize monthly Technical Meetings, which give opportunity for professional networking, and where invited speakers from the industry share their vision on the computing domain.
During early summer, the Chapter also organizes its own low-cost, high value, New Frontiers In Technology (NFIC) conference.

The intersection of computers with medical data is creating a form of direct and individualized diagnosis and treatment that transform health care to truly being up close and personalized medicine. The IEEE SCV-CS, NATEA and The Stanford University Student IEEE Chapter are pleased to present a conference to technically map out the engineering opportunities in this arena.

This June 16th at Stanford University’s Braun Auditorium, NFIC will cover the challenges and innovations of medical computing for the next generation healthcare and personalized medicine.

The NFIC conference is a collaboration among Stanford IEEE, IEEE Santa Clara Valley – Computer Society, and NATEA Silicon Valley. We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Architecting Android Apps

Date: Monday, May 7, 2012

Speaker: Marko Gargenta, Founder of Marakana.com and renowned Android expert.

Abstract:

Android brings to the table a whole new set of building blocks. Each has its own unique properties. Building an app is mashing them together in a unique way. Often, there are multiple approaches to seemingly the same result. Knowing what component to use when, is often a balance of art and science.

In this talk, we will explore main building blocks of Android: activities, services, providers, receivers as well as intents that glue them all together. We’ll learn about properties and variations of each. By the end of this talk, you should know how to write a straw-man implementation of basic building blocks, when to use them, and how to connect them together.

This talk is based on Ice Cream Sandwich release of Android.

Speaker bio:

Marko is the founder of Marakana.com and is the developer of Marakana Android Training series. He has taught Android to 1,000+ developers and sales engineers at companies such as Cisco, Motorola, Sprint, Qualcomm, Intel, HTC, Sharp, US Department of Defense and many others.

He is the author of Learning Android book published by O’Reilly Media. This book is based on Android Bootcamp and incorporates best learning practices for new developers to start creating applications for this exciting open source mobile platform.

Marko is also the co-chair of Android Open, an O’Reilly conference focusing on Android ecosystem. Marko frequently speaks at conferences and events such as OSCON, AnDevCon, Sprint Developers Conference, IEEE, ACM, and many others. He lives in San Francisco, California.

John Swan, chair emeritus of the Santa Clara Valley IEEE Computer Society chapter, has received a Meritorious Service Award for his role in revitalizing the chapter using social networking and high-caliber speakers at monthly events.

Swan received the Meritorious Service Award from Brian Berg, Santa Clara Valley 2012 Section Chair. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation in 2010 from then-SCV Section Chair Allen Earman for his revitalization efforts. Under Swan’s leadership, attendance at monthly meetings soared to as high as 200, from its previous average of 42. Detailed report in IEEE Computer Society articles in March 2010 and March 2012.
