After Dinner speech
“Rumble in the deep” by Mr. Skip Denny
A new undersea observatory discovered an otherwise unnoted volcanic eruption, right off our coast. On the day of the eruption, we detected ~8,000 earthquakes in the volcano, only a couple of which were detected on the shore-side seismometer network. We (UW APL and Oceanography) have been working in this area for several consecutive summers. We’ll show some before and after pictures (still and video) of Axial volcano and talk about the eruption and some of the data that shows the power of the new observatory.
I’ve worked in the R&D side of Ocean Engineering for over 30 years in large and small businesses. I’ve got a B.A. in Applied Physics and Information Sciences from UC San Diego and a M.S. in Ocean Engineering focusing on acoustics, system design and acoustic signal processing as a result of Navy exposure to the topic. I am currently a Principal Engineer at the Applied Physics Lab at UW and for the last 8 years have been part of a team that has designed, developed and deployed a cabled Ocean Observatory. I am currently the Chair of the Seattle Chapter of the Ocean Engineering Society.
