Student Paper Competition

The submission deadline for the 2017 Region 3 Student Paper Competition has been extended to February 20!

The Region 3 Student Paper competition is held annually in conjunction with SoutheastCon. Student papers are judged based on written content and oral presentation. All student papers submitted by the deadline are initially judged based on written content alone. The authors of the top papers, based on written content scores, will be invited to SoutheastCon to present their papers. The oral presentations of the papers are scored at SoutheastCon and the overall rankings of the papers are determined according to the scoring system given below.


  • February 15, 2017 Paper submission deadline.  (Now February 20!)
  • March 1, 2017 Authors notified of finalists for student paper competition.
  • April 1, 2017 Finalists present papers at SoutheastCon 2017 in Charlotte, NC.


All authors must be student members of IEEE in Region 3 at the time that the entry is submitted. All authors must be undergraduates at the time the paper is presented at SoutheastCon. Multiple authors are permitted up to a limit of three. All finalists presenting at SoutheastCon must be registered for the conference.


Papers should be submitted by e-mail in PDF format to the Region 3 Student Activities Chair (RSAC), Dr. J. Patrick Donohoe, at using the subject line: 2017 IEEE Region 3 Student Paper Contest Entry Attached.   Papers should be submitted by the Student Branch Counselor with the following endorsement statements included in the submission e-mail: “This paper meets the Region 3 requirement that all authors are student members of this IEEE student branch and will still be undergraduate students at the time of SoutheastCon. This paper is the only entry of our student branch.” Please copy all student authors on the paper submission e-mail. The RSAC will notify all student authors by e-mail regarding the selection of finalists.


Cash prizes for the IEEE Region 3 Student Paper Competition are as follows:

  • First Place – $800.00
  • Second Place – $500.00
  • Third Place – $200.00

The school represented by the author(s) of the first place paper will receive a plaque.


The following is a general guideline for the paper format. Note that both a cover page and a title page are required. The cover page, which contains the author(s) name(s) and student branch affiliation, will be removed before the paper is transmitted to the judges, in order to eliminate any bias in judging. The title page should not contain the names of author(s) or school affiliation.

The paper should be double-spaced using a font no smaller than 10 point. The Introduction, Body, Conclusions, and References together may not exceed 15 pages while these sections together with the Appendices may not exceed 20 pages.


Each paper will be allotted 15 minutes for oral presentation and 5 minutes for questions and answers. The RSAC will use a random process to determine the order of oral presentations and will endeavor to inform the participating schools of their presentation order prior to the conference.


The written content of each paper will be scored by three judges. The oral presentation of each paper will be scored by three judges. The papers will be ranked according to the sum of written and oral scores. Finalists are encouraged to bring three hardcopies of their papers for distribution to the judges at the time of the oral presentation.


The rubrics used to score the written content and oral presentation of each paper are given on the following:


WRITTEN PRESENTATION (maximum possible score: 56 points)  Points

  1.  Originality should be interpreted to give credit for results, investigative procedure, and
    conclusions that are primarily those of the author. A general guidance from the literature is
  2.  Originality can be evidenced by an unusual, imaginative, or concise treatment of the subject.
    Both (1) and (2) should be present to a reasonable degree to receive full credit.
Analytical Treatment: The fundamental nature of the subject should be clearly revealed, and the component parts of the topic should be carefully related to yield a unified analysis. 16
Interest:   The paper should be of general engineering or computer science interest and a sound engineering reason for considering the subject should be present 12
Mode of Expression:

  1.  Material should be organized logically and presented  clearly.
  2. Thoughts should be expressed concisely and coherently.
  3. Electrical theory should be used effectively and judiciously.
  4. The introduction and conclusion should be adequate. The introduction should properly orient the reader for the main body of the material. The closure should include a summary of the writer’s contributions, forecast, or conclusions.






ORAL PRESENTATION (maximum possible score: 44 points)
Speaking Technique:   The presenter should be clear and easy to understand. 12 Points
Style:   Presentation of the material should follow a logical course and should stimulate the thinking of the audience. 12 Points
Introduction and Conclusion:   The presentation should begin with a proper introduction. The background of the problem should be made clear before proceeding to the main body of the presentation. Conclusions should be briefly summarized 5 Points
Technical Presentation:    The speaker should exhibit a clear understanding of the topic, of the important related literature, and of the associated electrical theory. The presentation should be technically sound, and the fundamental nature of the subject should be clearly described. 10 Points
Discussion:  The speaker should display a reasonable knowledge of the subject by answering the questions adequately. 5 Points
