Deep Learning for Communications by Jakob Hoydis
In the last decade, deep learning has led to many breakthroughs in various domains, such as computer vision, natural language processing, and speech recognition. Motivated by these successes, researchers all over the world have recently started to investigate applications of this tool to their respective domain of expertise, with communications being one of them. The goal of this tutorial is to provide an introduction to deep learning that will enable the attendees to identify potential applications in their own research field. We give an overview of the very rapidly growing body of literature, explain state-of-the-art neural network architectures and training methods, and go through several promising applications and concepts, such as neural decoding, deep MIMO detection, and autoencoders. The attendees receive tutorial slides and Jupyter notebooks containing code examples which allows them to quickly get up to speed with this new and exciting field. During the break, we demonstrate the world’s first fully neural network-based communications system.
Jakob Hoydis is a member of technical staff at Nokia Bell Labs, France, where he is investigating since several years applications of deep learning for the physical layer. Before this position he was co-founder and CTO of the social network SPRAED and worked for Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs in Stuttgart, Germany. He received the diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in electrical engineering and information technology from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and the Ph.D. degree from Supélec, Gif-sur-Yvette, France, in 2008 and 2012, respectively. His research interests are in the areas of machine learning, cloud computing, SDR, large random matrix theory, information theory, signal processing and their applications to wireless communications. He is recipient of the 2012 Publication Prize of the Supélec Foundation, the 2013 VDE ITG Förderpreis, the IEEE 2015 Leonard G. Abraham Prize, and the IEEE 2018 Marconi Best Paper Award. He received the WCNC’2014 best paper award and has been nominated as an Exemplary Reviewer 2012 for the IEEE Communication letters. He has co-authored the textbook Massive MIMO Networks: Spectral, Energy, and Hardware Efficiency in 2017.
5G Overview – 3GPP New Radio Rel-15 by Pål Frenger
In this tutorial session we will provide an overview of the 3GPP New Radio (NR) Rel-15 standard. The session will cover a general overview of NR in terms of key design principles and differences in relation to previous standards such as LTE. We will also cover a significant amount of details related to architecture and protocols, time-frequency structure, UL and DL control channels, MIMO transmission modes, cell search, system information, paging, and initial random access. The lecture is suitable for anyone who wants an update on the latest developments related to the new 5G standard 3GPP New Radio Rel-15.
Pål Frenger joined Ericsson Research in 1999 and is currently working at the Wireless Access Networks department at Ericsson Research in Linköping, Sweden, where he holds a senior specialist position. He has a background in link level research, in particular on turbo coding and OFDM modulation aspects. He has been involved in development and standardization efforts for both HSPA, LTE, and NR. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden. He recently received the “Ericsson inventor of the year 2017” award.
The Swedish Communication Technology Workshop 2018 will be held at Linköping University. The symposium is hosted by the Department of Electrical Engineering.
The workshop program will start Thursday June 7th at 10:00, 2018 and end Friday June 8th, 2018 at 16:00.
The workshop programme except for the poster session will be held at Campus Valla, B-building, room AUGUSTA ADA LOWELACE. The poster presentation and mingle will be held in the foyer, main entrance 27, corridor C-D (in front of Café JAVA).
