Presentation 1 – Dr. Sergey Andreev
Title: Future of Ultra-Dense Networks Beyond 5G: Harnessing Heterogeneous Moving Cells

Abstract:
For past 40 years, cellular industry has been relying on static radio access deployments with gross over-provisioning. However, to meet the exponentially growing volumes of irregular data, the very notion of a cell will have to be rethought to allow them be (re-)configured on-demand and in automated manner. We advocate for a novel vision of moving networks to match dynamic user demand with network access supply in the beyond-5G heterogeneous cellular systems. The resulting adaptive and flexible network infrastructures will leverage more intelligent devices, such as connected cars and drones, by employing appropriate user incentivization mechanisms. This talk is a concise recollection of the corresponding research activities by the W.I.N.T.E.R. Group in Tampere, Finland to benefit from moving access networks in different contexts. These vary from opportunistic employment of mobile relays for small data delivery to tighter engagement of moving cells on a par with conventional (static) cellular access infrastructure, with a specific emphasis on communication challenges in extremely high frequencies.

Biography:
Dr. Sergey Andreev is Senior Research Scientist at Tampere University of Technology (Finland), where he is coordinating W.I.N.T.E.R. Group (http://winter-group.net/) focusing on 5G and IoT centric research. He has (co-)authored over 150 papers, several patents, and a number of IEEE and 3GPP standardization contributions in the areas of multi-radio heterogeneous networking, cooperative and proximate communications, energy efficiency, and machine-to-machine applications. This innovation activity has been well covered in media on both national and international levels. Sergey has been reviewer for numerous visible conferences and top-level international journals; he was named Exemplary Reviewer by IEEE Communications Letters in 2013. He has also been invited expert at a number of workshops, held many guest lectures at industry and academia worldwide, as well as acted as a keynote speaker. Previously, he has been recipient of highly competitive personal research grant by the Academy of Finland (9% success rate), as well as several other prestigious scholarships and awards.

Presentation 2 – Vitaly Petrov
Title: On the Synergy of Communications and Radar in V2V Scenarios

Abstract:
Joint vehicular radar and communications systems operating in the millimeter and low terahertz band have been recently suggested to simultaneously enable high data-rate vehicle-to-vehicle communications and high-resolution radars in future vehicular networks. However, massive deployment of such systems may potentially lead to significant interference, affecting the reliability of both the radar and the communications modules. To address this problem we propose to combine the radar and telecom modules, such that the strength of one regime will assist in the other’s weakness. Particularly, the CSMA-based channel access provided by the telecom module protects the radar sequences from the co-channel interference. Meanwhile, the proposed radar-aided channel assessment enables CSMA for the data transmissions and minimizes the deafness problem. Using a combination of measurement- and simulation-based methods we illustrate that the proposed concept can potentially bring notable performance gains over the existing solutions.

Biography:
Vitaly Petrov received the M.Sc. degree in information systems security from the Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2011, and the M.Sc. degree in communications engineering from the Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland, in 2014, where he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree, where he is involved in enabling terahertz band communications for beyond 5G wireless networks. He was a Visiting Scholar with Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, in 2014, and a Strategic Intern with Nokia Research Center, Helsinki, Finland, in 2012. He has been the recipient of Best Student Paper Award at IEEE VTC-Fall’15 and Best Student Poster Award at IEEE WCNC’17. His current research interests include the Internet-of-Things, terahertz band communications, nanonetworks, cryptology, and network security.

Title: Fog-Aided Wireless Networks: An Information-Theoretic View

Abstract:
Fog-aided wireless networks are an emerging class of wireless systems that leverage the synergy and complementarity of cloudification and edge processing, two key technologies in the evolution towards 5G systems and beyond. The operation of fog-aided wireless networks poses novel fundamental research problems pertaining to the optimal management of the communication, caching and computing resources at the cloud and at the edge, as well as to the transmission on the fronthaul network connecting cloud and edge. In this talk, it will be argued via specific examples concerning the problem of content delivery that network information theory provides a principled framework to develop fundamental theoretical insights and algorithmic guidelines on the optimal design of fog-aided networks. This work has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 725731).

Biography:
Osvaldo Simeone is a Professor of Information Engineering with the Centre for Telecommunications Research at the Department of Informatics of King’s College London. He received an M.Sc. degree (with honors) and a Ph.D. degree in information engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. He was previously a Professor with the Center for Wireless Information Processing (CWiP) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). His research interests include wireless communications, information theory, optimization and machine learning. Dr Simeone is a co-recipient of the 2017 JCN Best Paper Award, the 2015 IEEE Communication Society Best Tutorial Paper Award and of the Best Paper Awards of IEEE SPAWC 2007 and IEEE WRECOM 2007. He was awarded a Consolidator grant by the European Research Council (ERC) in 2016. His research has been supported by the U.S. NSF, the ERC, the Vienna Science and Technology Fund, as well by a number of industrial collaborations. He is currently a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Information Theory Society. Dr Simeone is a co-author of a monograph, an edited book published by Cambridge University Press and more than one hundred research journal papers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
