Title: Learning from the sky: Autonomous flying access networks for beyond 5G

The use of flying robots (drones) carrying radio transceiver equipment is the new promising frontier in our quest towards ever more flexible, adaptable and spectrally efficient wireless networks. Beyond obvious challenges within regulatory, control, navigation, and operational domains, the deployment of autonomous flying radio access network (Fly-RANs) also comes with a number of exciting new research problems such as the issue of autonomous real-time placement of the drones in a way that can guarantee user and network performance. We present several different scenarios of interest such as IoT monitoring and mobile broadband access. The approaches lie at the cross-roads between machine learning, signal processing and optimization. Some approaches exploit the reconstruction of 3D map from sampled radio measurements which can have application beyond the realm of communications. Early-stage practical realizations are demonstrated.

David Gesbert (IEEE Fellow) is Professor and Head of the Communication Systems Department, EURECOM. He obtained the Ph.D degree from Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications, France, in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 he has been with the Information Systems Laboratory, Stanford University. He was then a founding engineer of Iospan Wireless Inc, a Stanford spin off pioneering MIMO-OFDM (now Intel).
Before joining EURECOM in 2004, he has been with the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo as an adjunct professor. D. Gesbert has published about 270 papers and 25 patents, some of them winning the 2015 IEEE Best Tutorial Paper Award (Communications Society), 2012 SPS Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award, 2004 IEEE Best Tutorial Paper Award (Communications Society), 2005 Young Author Best Paper Award for Signal Proc. Society journals, and paper awards at conferences 2011 IEEE SPAWC, 2004 ACM MSWiM. He has been a Technical Program Co-chair for ICC2017. He was named a Thomson-Reuters Highly Cited Researchers in Computer Science.
David sits on the board of the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance and is also a visiting Academic Master within the Program 111 at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Since 2015, he holds the ERC Advanced grant “PERFUME” on the topic of smart device Communications in future wireless networks (www.ercperfume.org).

Title: Software Defined Wireless Networks and Network Function Virtualization as
Key Enablers for 5G, IoT and Smart Networked CPS

Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are technological systems where physical and cyber components are tightly integrated. Most CPS are networked, via the Internet, or the cloud, or special networks. Examples include future factories, Industrie 4.0 systems, modern enterprises, heterogeneous wireless networks, sensor networks, social networks over the Internet, Industrial Internet systems, smart cities. In Networked CPS (Net-CPS) new fundamental challenges emerge due to network semantics and characteristics. We describe our results on Net-CPS focusing on two fronts: (a) on the interface between cyber and physical components and their joint design and performance; (b) on the implications of the networked interfaces and the collaborative aspects of these systems and their design and performance. We next focus on one of the three multigraphs in our model, the communication multigraph, and demonstrate that the emerging technologies of Software Defined Wireless Networks (SDWN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) are key enablers of Net-CPS, and in particular smart Net-CPS, due to the dynamic resource and function allocations they allow. We describe our results on Network Function Placement, Network Slicing, Service Chain Embedding, Security. We discuss the relationship of these new technologies to Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G. Our results lead to network virtualization as a key novel principle for consistent automation and high performance smart control of Net-CPS, leading to a novel Software Defined Architecture for Net-CPS. We close with promising future research directions.

John S. Baras is a Distinguished University Professor and holds the endowed Lockheed Martin Chair in Systems Engineering at the Institute for Systems Research and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Maryland College Park. He received his Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1973. From 1985 to 1991, he was the Founding Director of the Institute for Systems Research and since 1992 he has been the Director of the Maryland Center for Hybrid Networks, which he co-founded. He is an IEEE Life Fellow, SIAM Fellow, AAAS Fellow, NAI Fellow, IFAC Fellow, AIAA Associate Fellow, AMS Fellow, Member of the National Academy of Inventors and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Major honors and awards include the 1980 George Axelby Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society, the 2006 Leonard Abraham Prize from the IEEE Communications Society, the 2017 IEEE Simon Ramo Medal, the 2017 AACC Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award., and the 2018 AIAA Aerospace Communications Award. In 2016 he was inducted in the University of Maryland A. J. Clark School of Engineering Innovation Hall of Fame. In June of 2018 he was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa by his alma mater the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He has been awarded eighteen patents and has been honored worldwide with many awards as innovator and leader of economic development.
