Alicia AbellaAlicia Abella, Keynote Speaker, AVP, AT&T, Cloud Technologies and Services Research Organization.

With 20 years of research experience, Dr. Abella has held positions that allow her to demonstrate her skills in a broad research spectrum which have unfolded into her organization’s current responsibilities which include research in cloud computing, software-defined storage, human-computer interaction, mobile services, and Internet of Things.

In 2013, Dr. Abella received Columbia University’s Medal of Excellence, an award given each year to an alumnus or alumna, under 45 years of age, whose record in scholarship, public service, or professional life is outstanding. This is the first time since 1929 –when the award was first given– that Columbia has awarded the medal to an engineer. In 2011, she was selected by President Obama to be on his Presidential Advisory Commission for Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Also in 2011, she was inducted into the prestigious WITI (Women in Technology International) Hall of Fame.

Besides her technical contributions, Dr. Abella has been a strong advocate in fostering the development of minorities and women in science and engineering. She received her B.S. in Computer Science from NYU and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University.

 

Clint Andrews, Professor and Associate Dean for Planning and New Initiatives; Director, Rutgers Center for Green Building

Clint Andrews, is a professor in the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, and was previously director of the Urban Planning program. His expertise is in the substance and processes of energy and environmental planning and policy. He was educated at Brown and MIT as an engineer and planner. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a LEED Accredited Professional, and a licensed Professional Engineer. Previous experience includes working in the private sector on energy issues, helping to launch an energy policy project at MIT, and helping to found a science policy program at Princeton. Andrews currently serves on the Board of Governors of the American Collegiate Schools of Planning, and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Society for Industrial Ecology, and a winner of the IEEE’s 3rd Millenium Medal. His books include Industrial Ecology and Global Change, Regulating Regional Power Systems, and Humble Analysis: The Practice of Joint Fact Finding.

 

Karen Bartleson, 2016 IEEE President-elect, Former President of IEEE Standards Association

Karen Bartleson has over 35 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, specifically in electronic design automation. Karen retired as Senior Director of Corporate Programs and Initiatives at Synopsys, an electronic design automation company, where her responsibilities included creating programs for technical standards development, software tool interoperability, and creating and maintaining strong relationships with universities and research institutions worldwide. Prior to Synopsys, Karen brought her exceptional professional and leadership skills to bear at United Technologies Microelectronics Center and Texas Instruments.

Karen was President of the IEEE Standards Association in 2013 and 2014. During her tenure, she led the development of a new strategic plan, furthered the principles of the OpenStand market-driven standardization paradigm, and finalized IEEE’s membership in the Global Standards Collaboration.

As a member of and leader within the IEEE Board of Directors in 2013 and 2014, she chaired and led the development of the strategic plan for the IEEE Internet Initiative Committee, whose charter is to raise IEEE’s influence and profile in the areas of Internet governance, cyber-security, and cyber-privacy policy development. She was also a member of the IEEE Strategy Committee, overseeing the development of the role of IEEE in global public policy.

Karen has published numerous articles about standards and universities and has authored the book “The Ten Commandments for Effective Standards: Practical Insights for Creating Technical Standards” (Synopsys Press, 2010). In 2003, she received the Marie R. Pistilli Women in Electronic Design Automation Achievement Award. She earned a B.S. in Engineering Science with a concentration in Electronic Engineering from California Polytechnic State University in 1980.

 

Marc BrackenMarc Bracken, M.A.Sc., P.Eng., Vice President and General Manager, Echologics, LLC.

With more than 18 years of experience in acoustical and vibration engineering, and 11 years of management experience in the water industry, Marc Bracken is Vice President and General Manager of Toronto-based Echologics, an innovative solution provider in acoustic leak detection, pipeline condition assessment, and non-revenue water. Echologics is a subsidiary of Mueller Water Products and has worked with utilities and municipalities across North America, and in Europe, South Africa, Singapore and Australia to prioritize water system repairs and improve water conservation.

Since starting Echologics, Marc has led the company in improving and expanding the technology base that can be applied to solve our client’s needs. These efforts have made Echologics one of the only broad based technology and service providers that is providing water operators with solutions to address ageing infrastructure and allowing them to address high levels of water loss that are an issue all over the world. Marc has presented numerous technical papers on leak detection and water pipe condition assessment.

Marc received Bachelor and Master Degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Toronto.

Tom Caldwell, Co-Founder and EVP of CyberFlow Analytics

A veteran of Cisco and Microsoft, Tom has deep expertise in delivering Cloud-based software products and large scale software systems to large enterprise and service providers. Most recently Tom was Co-Founder/EVP of CyberFlow Analytics, a Network Behavioral Analytics startup. Tom’s new projects now include Cyber Security Threat Intelligence and End Point Protection. With a MS in Computer Science, he has more than 20 years in business and software engineering.

 

Winnie L. CallahanWinnie L. Callahan, Director of the University of San Diego Center for Cyber Security Engineering and Technology

Winnie Callahan is founding director of the University of San Diego Center for Cyber Security Engineering and Technology. In this role, Callahan works with both the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering and the School of Professional and Continuing Education to build a world-class Cyber Security program through academic degree opportunities, certificate programs, service, and associated research.

Prior to joining USD, Callahan served as the Director of Innovation for the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute and the founding Associate Director of Informatics at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. In this capacity she helped launch the Masters of Science in Cyber Security Engineering degree, and developed multiple research partnerships, including membership in the prestigious Northrop Grumman Cyber Security Research Consortium.
From 1997 to 2008, Dr. Winnie Callahan served as Executive Director of the University of Nebraska’s Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI), a unique partnership between two colleges within the University of Nebraska system and industry and governmental agencies. PKI was nationally recognized as the best model in the country for immersing business, engineering and technology.

Dr. Callahan has developed cyber security curriculum for the FBI, Los Angeles Police, and Los Angeles Sheriff’s departments, and also developed an Information Operations program for United States Strategic Command that focused on cyber challenges. She has led focus groups of executives in Fortune 500 companies and leaders in the military and government to discuss cyber security concerns from multiple perspectives, create public/private networks, and help to develop curriculum baselines for K-20.

Dr. Callahan holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Winthrop University, and a Master’s and Doctorate from the University of Nebraska in Educational Administration.

 

Rita ChadhaRitu Chadha, Senior Research Director at Applied Communication Sciences, or Vencore Labs

Dr. Ritu Chadha is a Senior Research Director at Applied Communication Sciences, or Vencore Labs, where she heads the Data Analytics Research department. She is the Principal Investigator for several DoD projects, including DARPA’s Wireless Network Defense program, where she is developing techniques for detecting and mitigating attacks on the control plane of wireless ad hoc networks, and the Army Research Labs’ Cyber Security Applied Research and Experimentation Partner program, where she is leading the development of innovative cyber experimentation capabilities. She is currently leading Vencore Labs’ healthcare analytics research efforts that make use of advanced machine learning techniques to support Vencore’s pioneering work in identifying undiagnosed patients suffering from rare diseases. She authored a book on policy-driven mobile ad hoc networks in 2007. She is a Telcordia Fellow and a senior member of the IEEE, and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science obtained from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991.

 

Vincent W. S. ChanVincent W. S. Chan, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor of EECS, MIT

Vincent W. S. Chan, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor of EECS, MIT, received his BS(71), MS(71), EE(72), and Ph.D.(74) degrees in EE all from MIT. From 1974 to 1977, he was an assistant professor, EE, at Cornell University. He joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1977 and had been Division Head of the Communications and Information Technology Division until becoming the Director of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (1999–2007). He is currently a member of the Claude E. Shannon Communication and Network Group at the Research Laboratory of Electronics of MIT.

In July 1983, he initiated the Laser Intersatellite Transmission Experiment Program and in 1997, the follow-on GeoLITE Program. In 1989, he formed the All-Optical-Network Consortium among MIT, AT&T and DEC. He also formed and served as PI the Next Generation Internet Consortium, ONRAMP among AT&T, Cabletron, MIT, Nortel and JDS, and a Satellite Networking Research Consortium formed between MIT, Motorola, Teledesic and Globalstar. He has founded in 2009 and is serving as the Editor-in-Chief of a new IEEE/OSA Journal: Journal of Optical Communications and Networking. He is currently a Member of the Corporation of Draper Laboratory, the Technical Advisory Board of Mercury Computer and on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communication Society. He is also an elected member of Eta-Kappa-Nu, Tau-Beta-Pi and Sigma-Xi, the Fellow of the IEEE and the Optical Society of America.

Throughout his career, Professor Chan has spent his research focus on communication and networks, particularly on free space and fiber optical communication and networks and satellite communications. His work has led the way to a successful laser communication demonstration in space and early deployment of WDM optical networks. His recent research emphasis is on heterogeneous (satcom, wireless and fiber) network architectures with stringent performance demands.

 

Yen-Kuang ChenDr. Yen-Kuang Chen, Principal Engineer at Intel Corporation, and Associate Director of Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center

Dr. Yen-Kuang Chen is an IEEE Fellow and the chair of Internet of Things special interest group of IEEE Signal Processing Society. He is a Principal Engineer at Intel Corporation, and Associate Director of Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center. His research areas span from emerging multimedia applications that can utilize the true potential of internet of things to computer architecture that can embrace emerging applications. He has 50+ US patents, 20+ pending patent applications, and 85+ technical publications. He is one of the key contributors to Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extension 3 and Advanced Vector Extension in Intel microprocessors. He has served as a program committee member of 50+ international conferences on Internet of Things, multimedia, video communication, image processing, VLSI circuits and systems, parallel processing, and software optimization. He is a steering committee member of IEEE Internet of Things Journal and will be the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems, from 2016 to 2017.

 

Tom ConteTom Conte, Professor in the Schools of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology

Dr. Conte received his BSEE from the University of Delaware in 1986 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in EE from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Conte’s research is in the areas of computer architecture and compiler optimization, including many-core architectures, microprocessor architectures, back-end compiler code generation, architectural performance evaluation and embedded computer system architectures. He served as the President of the IEEE Computer Society in 2015 and currently chairs the IEEE Rebooting Computing Initiative. Conte is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Celia Desmond, Lead Project Manager for Echologics Engineering has established a Project Management Office for a rapidly growing company, where her team manages all proposals, contracts and processes for the project managers. She is also President of World Class – Telecommunications, which provides training in telecommunications management. Celia has lectured internationally on programs for success in today’s changing environment. She recently completed a project converting the network of a major Canadian bank to an MPLS network. As a Director at Stentor Resource Center Inc., she was instrumental in establishing culture and new processes for service/product development and for project governance. At Bell Canada, Celia provided strategic direction to corporate planners, ran technology/service trials, standardized equipment, and provided technical and project management support to large business clients. She has held numerous senior management positions at IEEE including Project Director for Certification in Wireless Engineering Technology, managing a team of over 200 people in 8 different development areas, Director and Secretary of IEEE, IEEE Vice President – Technical Activities, President of IEEE Communications Society. David DoddDavid Dodd, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, Stevens Institute of Technology

Over his 30-year career, David Dodd has held leadership positions in higher education, research and development, business, law, and government. Most recently, Dodd served as Vice President for Information Resources and Chief Information Officer at Xavier University, where he was responsible for Xavier’s academic and administrative technology programs, the library, instructional technology and multimedia, online course development and support, web services, registrar, institutional research and strategic information resources. Prior to his role at Xavier, Dodd was Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and CIO at the University of South Carolina Upstate and Executive Director of Information Technology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He previously held a number of positions in academe and industry. Dodd has made more than 35 presentations in the areas of information technology, virtual learning, change management and strategic planning at national forums such as EDUCAUSE. He has also written extensively on IT and higher education, and has served as the “Emerging Technology” columnist for College Planning and Management since 2002, covering a range of topics from the use of GPS on campus to cloud computing to project management. He has recently taught courses in Global Strategic Thinking, Information Resources and Technology, Strategic Planning and Leadership and has successfully pursued private and competitive funding opportunities. He is active and has held a variety of leadership positions in EDUCAUSE and other organizations.

Dr. Stuart Elby is Senior Vice President, Data Center Business Group at Infinera Corporation, where he is responsible for data center networking product management and platform development targeted at cloud and data center operators.
Prior to Infinera, Elby served as VP and Chief Technologist of Verizon Labs and Verizon Digital Media Service. During his tenure at Verizon, he had significant influence in the architecture and development of Verizon’s networks and services platforms including the migration to packet voice, the adoption of MPLS, introduction of wavelength switching/ROADM platforms, the first live carrier 100G LH link, and automated digital media distribution services. Previously, he served as a research associate at the NSF Center for Telecommunications Research at Columbia University, lead technologist at a laser surgery start-up and staff engineer at StorageTek. He serves on several university and industry advisory boards. Elby holds a BS in Optical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an MSEE and Doctorate from Columbia University.

 

Jack GallantJack Gallant, Chancellor’s Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley

Jack Gallant is Chancellor’s Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is affiliated with the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and with the graduate programs in Bioengineering, Biophysics, Neuroscience and Vision Science. He is also a Senior Member of the IEEE. Gallant’s research program focuses on functional mapping and computational modeling of the brain. These computational models of brain activity describe how information about the external and internal world are mapped systematically across the surface of the cerebral cortex during complex, naturalistic tasks. These models can also be used to decode information in the brain in order to reconstruct mental experiences. COL John GrahamCOL John Graham, Ph.D, West Point’s Associate Dean for Research and Chief Scientist and founder of the Network Science Center

Colonel Graham is West Point’s Associate Dean for Research and Chief Scientist and founder of the Network Science Center. He received a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, a M.S. from Ohio State University, B.S. from West Point. His work has focused on design and deployment of collaborative command and control systems at the operational and tactical level. Previously, COL Graham served as Program Manager for Engineering Psychology and the Laboratory Director in the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department at West Point. Operationally, John led the Space Control Detachment of Army Space Command (OEF), was the Director of Space Intelligence and Operations Courses (NORAD/USSPCECOM), and held leadership positions in the 10th Mountain Division, 82nd Airborne Division, and Korea. Most recently, he led security operations for the capital city of Kabul through the nation’s first elections. He is Cyber Mission Force, Space Operations, Jumpmaster, and Ranger Qualified.

 

 

Kathy Herring HayashiKathy Herring Hayashi, Senior Staff Engineer, Qualcomm, Senior Member of IEEE

Kathy has been involved in semiconductor software her entire career. At Unisys Corporation, she worked in research and development, working in teams to develop advanced in-house CAD software tools, including a custom RTL, custom parsers and behavior to structure synthesis tools using rules based AI techniques. She also worked on an advanced parametric graphical layout language which significantly reduced the development complexity for layout. Through acquisition, she transitioned to Cadence Design Systems where some of the previous tools were incorporated into commercial EDA tools.

She then brought her technical breadth and professional leadership to Syntricity, a San Diego based semiconductor startup. As the Director of Professional Services and Support, she led groups to successfully develop, test and support an internet based semiconductor yield management tool built on a high performance data warehouse. Kathy currently works at Qualcomm Inc., analyzing and optimizing semiconductor workflows in large scale compute environments. She also teaches at the Computer Science and Information Technology Department of Palomar College in San Marcos, California.

Kathy Herring Hayashi founded and currently chairs the San Diego IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group and was the recipient of the IEEE 2016 Southwest Area award for Outstanding Individual–Outstanding Leadership and Professional Service.

 

Gary R. HayslipGary R. Hayslip, Deputy Director, Chief Information Security OFficer, City of San Diego, CA

As Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the City of San Diego, Gary advises the City of San Diego’s executive leadership consisting of Mayoral, City Council, and 40+ city departments and agencies on protecting city government information resources. Gary oversees citywide cyber operations, compliance and risk assessment services. His mission includes creating a “risk aware” culture that places high value on securing city information resources and protecting personal information entrusted to the City of San Diego.

Gary is a proven cyber security professional, he has a record of establishing enterprise information security programs and managing multiple cross-functional network and security teams. Gary has established a reputation as a highly skilled communicator and presenter. He has demonstrated ability to work within all business channels of an organization and is extremely effective in communicating the nuances of cyber security in business/risk terms for executive management. He has strong business acumen, problem solving abilities, and solid critical thinking skills.

Joe Herkert, D.Sc., is a Visiting Scholar at the Genetic Engineering and Society Center, North Carolina State University. He was formerly Lincoln Associate Professor of Ethics and Technology in the College of Letters and Sciences and the Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes, Arizona State University (retired May 2015). Herkert has been teaching engineering ethics and science, technology & society courses for nearly thirty years. He is editor of Social, Ethical and Policy Implications of Engineering: Selected Readings (Wiley/IEEE Press, 2000) and co-editor of The Growing Gap between Emerging Technologies and Legal-Ethical Oversight: The Pacing Problem (Springer, 2011), and has published numerous articles on engineering ethics and societal implications of technology in engineering, law, social science, and applied ethics journals. Herkert previously served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine and an Associate Editor of Engineering Studies. He has been a leader in many professional organizations including the Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the National Institute for Engineering Ethics, and the Engineering Ethics and Liberal Education/Engineering and Society (LEES) Divisions of the American Society for Engineering Education. In 2005 Herkert received the Sterling Olmsted Award, the highest honor bestowed by LEES, for “making significant contributions in the teaching and administering of liberal education in engineering education.” Herkert is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Societal Impacts of Science and Engineering Section), a Life Senior Member of IEEE and served a three-year term on the IEEE Ethics and Member Conduct Committee. He currently serves on the Advisory Group of the Center for Engineering Ethics and Society of the National Academy of Engineering. Herkert received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University and his doctorate in Engineering & Policy from Washington University in St. Louis.

James Kozloski IBM Research Division, Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 USA (kozloski@us.ibm.com). Dr. Kozloski is a Research Staff Member in the Computational Biology Center, where he is Principal Investigator for IBM’s Brain Modeling projects, leading a team that applies Computational Neuroscience to problems in brain disease and computation. Before joining IBM, he received his PhD. in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, studying and modeling functional brain circuits. At IBM, he devised a novel closed loop brain model and an ultrascalable computational method for detailed modeling of large scale neural tissue anatomy and physiology. He has coauthored 8 computational neuroscience papers and technical reports and 50 issued patents in the area of neurotechnology and computer science. He was named an IBM Master Inventor and advises IBM’s strategy in Neuroscience.

 

Rakesh KumarRakesh Kumar, Ph.D., President and CEO, TCX Technology Connexions

Dr. Rakesh Kumar is a semiconductor industry veteran, an entrepreneur, and an educator. He is President and CEO of TCX Technology Connexions, a company which provides management, business, entrepreneurial and technical ‘bridging the gaps’ consulting services in advanced semiconductor technology and virtual operations areas. Clients include emerging fabless IC companies, mid-size and large, Fortune 500 IC companies, as well as leading research organizations. Currently he educates and mentors potential entrepreneurs at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Kumar authored the book “Fabless Semiconductor Implementation”, published by McGraw Hill. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and active volunteer since late 1980’s. He was the President of IEEE’s 10,000 member Solid-State Circuits Society during 2012-13.

During his 42 year career in the semiconductor industry Dr. Kumar has also been the VP&GM of Cadence Design’s worldwide Silicon Technology Services business unit, and has held various technical and management positions at Unisys and Motorola.

He received the Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1974 and 1971 respectively. He graduated from IIT Delhi in 1969 with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. He received an Executive MBA from the University of California, San Diego in 1989.

Roberto Minerva is the chair of the IEEE IoT Initiative, the mission of which is to serve as the gathering place for the global technical community working on IoT; and to provide the platform where IoT professionals learn, share knowledge, and collaborate on this sweeping convergence of technologies, markets, applications, and the Internet, and together change the world.

Roberto has been with Telecom Italia since 2000, serving most recently in Telecom Italia’s Lab and its Future Center, identifying and understand how new technologies can be disruptive on the Telco business and how they can be used to the advantage of Telecom Italia.

Over the years Roberto has built a personal divergent view and vision on the future of communications far from the dominant mainstream: software and IT solutions will dominate and take over the old traditional solutions (and way of thinking) of Telcos. He is a frequently invited speaker internationally on the topics Internet of Things, Software Network (self-organization, peer to peer), and Smart Cities.

 

Meredith Perry, Founder and CEO, uBeam

Meredith Perry is the inventor of uBeam, a technology that uses ultrasound to transmit power over the air to charge electronic devices wirelessly. Using a patented system, uBeam is the only wireless power system that can safely charge multiple electronic devices wirelessly at a distance, and it is expected to be commercially available in late 2016.

Meredith founded uBeam in 2011 while studying at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, Meredith served as a student ambassador for NASA, where she worked on technology to detect life on Mars, experimented in zero gravity and researched and published papers in astrobiology and medicine. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in paleobiology.

Meredith has been included in Fortune’s “40 Under 40” Mobilizers, Forbes’ “30 Under 30” and Vanity Fair’s “The New Establishment.” She has also been recognized as one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People” and is the recipient of Elle Magazine’s Genius Award

 

Jan RabaeyJan Rabaey, Ph.D., Professor, UC Berkeley, Scientific Co-Director BWRC, Director Ubiquitous Swarm Lab

Jan Rabaey received his Ph.D degree in applied sciences from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. In 1987, he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department of the University of California, Berkeley, where he now holds the Donald O. Pederson Distinguished Professorship. He has founded and directed a number of influential research labs. Currently, he serves as a scientific co-director of the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC), as well as the founding director of the Berkeley Ubiquitous SwarmLab.

Prof. Rabaey has made high-impact contributions to a number of fields, including advanced wireless systems, sensor networks, configurable ICs and ultra low-power design. His current interests include the conception and implementation of next-generation integrated wireless systems over a very broad range of applications, as well as exploring the interaction between the cyber and the biological world. He has authored a number of very widely used textbooks.

He is the recipient of a wide range of major awards, amongst which the IEEE CAS Society Mac Van Valkenburg Award, the European Design Automation Association (EDAA) Lifetime Achievement award, and the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) University Researcher Award. He is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and Arts of Belgium, and has been involved in a broad variety of start-up ventures.

 

Jon RokneJon Rokne, Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Calgary

Jon Rokne is a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary. He has published extensively in mathematics and computer science. He was Vice-President IEEE, PSPB in 2009 and 2010. He was the Publications track chair of the IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative 2011-2014 during which time he developed and successfully presented three IEEE multi-society publications proposals: Transactions on Cloud Computing, IEEE Cloud Computing Magazine and Transactions on Big Data Phase I. He is currently on the IEEE Future Directions Committee and the publications track chair of the IEEE Big Data Initiative.

Paul Sajda is a professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Radiology at Columbia University and Director of the Laboratory for Intelligent Imaging and Neural Computing at Columbia University. Much of his current research focuses on using multimodal neuroimaging and behavioral measures to track selective attention and the dynamics of cognitive state during rapid decision making. He also applies these basic scientific findings to engineer neurotechnology systems that improve human-machine interaction. Roberto Saracco is the President of EIT ICTLABS Italy and Italy Node Director of EIT Digital (European Institute of Innovation and Technology). His background is in math and computer science. Up to December 2011 he was the Director of the Telecom Italia Future Centre in Venice, looking at the interplay of technology evolution, economics and society. At the turn of the century he led a World Bank-Infodev project to stimulate entrepreneurship in Latin America. He is a senior member of IEEE where he leads the Future Directions Committee. He has published over 100 papers in journals and magazines and 14 books.

 

 

 

 

Norman ShawNorman Shaw, Director of Product and Business Development at IEEE Standards Association

Norman Shaw is the Director of Product and Business Development with the IEEE Standards Association. Prior to joining the IEEE, Norman worked in the wireless/telecommunications industry for over 20 years and held positions at every level within the Engineering/Product Development disciplines; from staff engineer to Chief Technical Officer (CTO).

Norman’s experience spans all sizes and types of organizations, from leadership within AT&T Wireless to Senior Management within Silicon Valley start-up companies. He was engaged with the 3GPP for ten years and served as Rapporteur for new technology Study Items (SI), Work Items (WI) and actual changes in 3G and 4G wireless standards. Norman holds a BSEE and MSEE from the University of South Florida and has completed all his PhD course work at the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Antonio SkarmetaAntonio Skarmeta, Professor Computer Science, University of Murcia, Spain

Dr. Antonio F. Skarmeta has been a Professor in the Computer Science department at University of Murcia in Spain since 1993. He has worked on research projects in the national and international arenas, including Euro6IX, 6Power, Positif, Seinit, Deserec, Enable and Daidalos, SWIFT, IoT6 and Openlab. Antonio’s main interest is in the integration of security services at different layers as in networking, management and Internet of Things. He is associate editor of the IEEE SMC-Part B and reviewer of several international journals. Antonio has published over 90 international papers and been a member of several program committees. He received the M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Granada and B.S. (Hons.) and the Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Murcia Spain.

Elie Track is CEO of nVizix LLC, which he founded in 2013 to focus on commercializing a new high efficiency vacuum solar cell. For most of his career he was active in superconducting electronics with a focus on commercialization, including technology transfer of the Primary Voltage Standard designs from NIST to Hypres, Inc., a company for which he was President and CEO from 1994 to 2000, and remained Sr. Partner until recently. From 2003 to 2005 he was Visiting Professor of Physics at Fairfield University. He is an IEEE Fellow, President of the IEEE Council on Superconductivity, and a member of the IEEE Future Directions Committee. He has served as Chair and Program Chair of major conferences and workshops in superconductivity since 1998, including as Chair of the most recent 2014 Applied Superconductivity Conference. He served as President of the Yale Science and Engineering Association (YSEA) from 2007 to 2010 and as Chairman of the Coalition for the Commercial Applications of Superconductors (CCAS) from 2008 to 2010. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Yale University (1988) and is author/co-author of over 45 publications in the field.

 

Drew TaylorDrew Taylor, CEO, AstroPrint

Drew’s love of technology started with coding in BASIC on his RadioShack TRS 80 and has culminated in becoming the CEO and founder of AstroPrint, the IoT platform for the 3D printing industry. Along the way, he also worked in sports medicine, practiced alternative medicine, and did aide work in medically underserved areas of the U.S. and Asia.

AstroPrint is an IoT platform for the 3D Printing vertical, often called the “Android of the 3D Printing Industry.” The AstroPrint software platform is the world’s largest ecosystem of 3D Printing content and applications, and is compatible with 80% of 3D Printers on the market. This positions AstroPrint as the default platform for 3rd party content development and distribution for the entire 3DP market.

 

 

Eric TobiasEric Tobias, CEO, FHOOSH, Inc.

Eric Tobias serves as the CEO of FHOOSH, the high-performance cybersecurity software company. With more than 35 years of semiconductor and software industry experience, Tobias is a proven entrepreneur who builds and leads teams that create novel technology approaches to solve real customer business issues. He co-founded FHOOSH to manage the twin challenges of speeding and securing data from the endpoint/edge to the cloud. Tobias has also co-founded and headed a string of successful start-ups, including QThink (integrated circuit design services), Concerto Networks (franchised business technology solutions for SMBs), SoiraCam (human VisionSphere wearables) and Pyramid Peak Ventures (financial engineering). Additionally, he serves as an advisor to several San Diego-area technology companies and is past chairman of integrated circuit design and embedded software firm Encore Semi.

Tobias has a strong background in software development and implementation, semiconductor design and manufacturing and team management. He is an inventor listed on two US patents and 17 patents pending, in the areas of advanced semiconductor manufacturing, secure data-mapping and high-speed data deconstruction, obfuscation and transmission. Sherry TurkleSherry Turkle, Keynote Speaker, Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, and the founder (2001) and current director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.

Professor Turkle received a joint doctorate in sociology and personality psychology from Harvard University and is a licensed clinical psychologist. Professor Turkle writes on the “subjective side” of people’s relationships with technology, especially computers. She is an expert on culture and therapy, mobile technology, social networking, and sociable robotics.

Her newest book is the New York Times bestseller, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age (Penguin Press, October 2015), which investigates how a flight from conversation undermines our relationships, creativity, and productivity.

Previous works include four other books about evolving relationships in digital culture (Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other; The Second Self: Computers and the Human Spirit; Life on the Screen: Identity in the Age of the Internet; and Simulation and Its Discontents, and one book about the history of psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Politics: Jacques Lacan and Freud’s French Revolution. Turkle has also edited several collections on how we use objects to think with, particularly in the development of ideas about science. Jeff VoasJeffrey Voas, computer scientist, Computer Security Division, Information Technology Laboratory, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology

Jeffrey Voas is a computer scientist, Computer Security Division, Information Technology Laboratory, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. Before joining NIST, Voas was an entrepreneur and co-founded Cigital (1992). After 13 years at Cigital, Voas accepted a director position at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and was named an SAIC Technical Fellow (2005-2009). He has served as the IEEE Reliability Society President (2003-2005, 2009-2010), and serves as the IEEE Computer Society’s Second VP (2010). Voas is IEEE Division VI’s Director-Elect (2010). Voas co-authored two John Wiley books (Software Assessment: Reliability, Safety, and Testability [1995] and Software Fault Injection: Inoculating Software Against Errors [1998]), is currently an Associate Editor-In-Chief of IEEE’s IT Professional magazine, and is on the editorial board of IEEE Computer Magazine. He was one of two people named IEEE Reliability Engineer of the Year in 2000. He received two U.S. patents and has over 150 publications. Voas received his undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Tulane University (1985), and received his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the College of William and Mary (1986, 1990 respectively). Voas performed a two-year post-doc for the National Research Council (1990-1992). Voas is a Fellow of the IEEE.

 

Bob VoigtBob Voigt, Northrop Grumman Fellow, Product Area Architect for Transformational Computing

Dr. Robert Voigt is the Product Area Architect for Transformational Computing for Advanced Concepts and Technologies for Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. He has been active in many areas of computer architecture but his principal work for NGC has been in the area of advanced processing architectures for signal and data processing. His latest role is the Chief Architect for a superconducting computing program working with the Reciprocal Quantum Logic (RQL) logic family. As a former Engineering Duty Officer with the U.S. Navy, he has acted as technical lead, systems engineer and program manager on various DoD programs. Prior to coming to Northrop Grumman, Bob was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy where his primary research focus was in optical DWDM networks. During his tenure he also he also served as Chair of the department.

Dr. Voigt received his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and Masters and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

 

Charlene WalradCharlene “Chuck” Walrad, Chair, Professional Activities Board, IT Committee IEEE Computer Society

After her doctoral fellowship in theoretical linguistics at the University of California, San Diego, Chuck utilized advances in both computing and linguistics to produce a multilingual translation system still used by US Government agencies, multinational corporations, and the European Commission; and as the original Babelfish on the Internet.
She later managed engineering functions at software companies  to produce a courseware authoring system used at organizations such as Boeing, managed the first PC version of Ingres and the first truly distributed RDBMS (Ingres Star), and managed FrameMaker and PostScript engineering at Adobe.

This software engineering experience led her to form Davenport Consulting, Inc. to propagate successful commercial software product creation strategies in both product companies and in IT organizations. Clients have included Adobe, BMC, Cisco, IBM, Ford, Microsoft, and have ranged from small Silicon Valley  start-ups, several of which were subsequently acquired by large companies, to large IT organizations in businesses as diverse as fashion, railroads, and insurance.

Chuck has also been an invited speaker at conferences and has published articles in Computer magazine, ITPro, and the IBM Systems Journal, among others. Chuck serves this year as IEEE computer Society Treasurer and is Editor of the Standards column in Computer magazine and Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming Guide to the Enterprise IT Body of Knowledge.

 

Joe WeinmanJoe Weinman, Author, Cloudonomics and Digital Disciplines

Joe Weinman is the author of Cloudonomics: The Business Value of Cloud Computing (Wiley, 2012), which has been translated into two Chinese editions, and the Amazon #1 Hot New Release in Computers and Technology, Digital Disciplines: Attaining Market Leadership via the Cloud, Big Data, Social, Mobile, and the Internet of Things (Wiley CIO, 2014). He is also a contributor to Regulating the Cloud (MIT Press, 2014) and a forthcoming Springer textbook on big data applications. He is the Cloud Economics editor for IEEE Cloud Computing magazine, and has contributed to numerous print and online publications such as Forbes, InformationWeek, Wired, and CIO. A long time industry executive, he has held leadership positions at AT&T Bell Labs, AT&T corporate, HP, and Telx, a data center and colocation provider. R. Stanley WilliamsStan Williams, Senior Fellow and Director of the Foundational Technologies group at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Labs

Williams joined HP Labs in 1995 to found the Quantum Science Research group, which originally focused on fundamental scientific research at the nanometer scale. Prior to HP, Williams was a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Labs and a professor in the department of chemistry at UCLA. Williams received his B.A. in chemical physics from Rice University and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

 

 

 

 

Joshua WindmillerJoshua Windmiller, Chief Technology Officer, Co-Founder, Biolinq, Inc.

Dr. Joshua Windmiller is an internationally-recognized expert in printed biosensor technology. His Ph.D. research, funded by a Powell Foundation fellowship, focused on the development of printed biosensors, bioelectronics, and biofuel cells. He has published over 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has eleven US patents issued or pending. Dr. Windmiller, a Gordon Fellow, NIH SHIFT awardee, and two-time NIH Lab-to-Marketplace awardee is the recipient of the Printed Electronics USA 2010 Academic R&D award for his developments in textile-based printed bioelectronics. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Laboratory for NanoBioElectronics at UCSD in 2013, where he was supported by the von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and led a commercialization grant sponsored by the DOE. For his successful product development activities leading to the commercialization of novel printed bioelectronic paradigms, he received the Printed Electronics USA 2014 Product Development award. He currently serves as the CTO of Biolinq, a startup that he co-founded devoted to the development of the novel biosensing modalities he has invented for application in the personal wellness and healthcare domains.
