Abstract:

Manitoba Hydro plans to build a new HVDC transmission line (Bipole III) between Keewatinoow in northern Manitoba and Riel in southern Manitoba. This transmission line will improve system reliability and provide additional transmission capacity for the delivery of existing and proposed hydroelectric
generation to southern Manitoba. This presentation summarizes part of the studies conducted for the Riel harmonic impedance studies project. The project was in support of the specification of the ac filters associated with Riel converter station. Since Riel is in close proximity to Dorsey converter station, the existing converter station for Bipole I and II, harmonic injections and the existing ac filters at Dorsey will affect the performance and ratings of the ac filters at Riel and vice versa. The presentation describes the approach taken to evaluate the interaction level between Riel and Dorsey. It also presents the results of a preliminary review of Dorsey filter ratings that takes into account the harmonic effects caused by Riel converter station.
