Title:

50 Years of Transformer Problems

Date:

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 12:00 noon.

Location:

Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg

Speaker:

Alan Forrest

Abstract:

The presentation will cover some of the many problems encountered during Alan’s fifty years of experience with power transformers. Over a period of almost twenty years with English Electric in England, the size of units increased by almost an order of magnitude. During this period many problems were identified, largely because of leakage fluxes, insulation impregnation and partial discharges, that were not fully understood at the time. These will be discussed.

Speaker Bio:

Alan obtained his technical education at Faraday House, London, England. Alan completed his apprenticeship with English Electric in their Stafford plant, working on all types of large transformers, switchgear, and rotating machines. After completing two years of compulsory army service, he returned to English Electric where he worked in their transformer development for over 12 years. During this time Alan worked on many transformer problems, and was involved in visiting numerous sites where transformers had failed. Following a
company takeover, Alan moved to Winnipeg and joined Teshmont. Except for a period of 20 months when he worked for BC Hydro, Alan has remained with Teshmont.
