Presentation abstract:

Manitoba Hydro launched the Solar Energy Program on Earth Day 2016. At that time, approximately 50 kW of roof top solar PV capacity was registered with Manitoba Hydro. Today, over 1.5 MW of capacity has been installed and several more are in queue to be installed this year. This presentation will describe the program and its drivers as well as distribution requirements, benefits and challenges.

Speaker Biography:

Gerard Batara: Gerard is an Electrical Engineer at Manitoba Hydro under the University of Manitoba Internationally Educated Engineers program. He first joined the company with Generation Operation under Protection & Control Design Group where he handled projects on generator exciter units; protection upgrades and arc flash assessments. Gerard also worked with the Power Quality group where he was involved in assessing and benchmarking customer power quality concerns, including facility investigations and recommending mitigation. He is currently working with Power Quality and Performance Engineering Section and is responsible for evaluating solar PV applications under the Manitoba Hydro Solar Energy Program.

Lindsay Maitland: Lindsay received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Manitoba in 2003. She has been with Manitoba Hydro since 2007, designing and delivering various Power Smart programs in both the residential and commercial sectors. Currently, she manages the Solar Energy Program which provides incentives and financing to customers installing solar PV systems.
