Abstract:

Synchronized phasor measurement technology provides voltage and current phasors synchronized with high precision to a common reference. This is achieved by time synchronizing the sampling of signals and time tagging the phasors using the global positioning system (GPS). This allows computing different system variables with a very good resolution and track the evolution of the grid after major changes in the operation condition or critical disturbances.

The outline of this presentation introduces a measurement based High Voltage Direct Current (HVdc) power order reduction scheme for stabilizing large interconnected power systems after the occurrence of severe disturbances. This new approach is based on the Wide Area Phasor Measurement technology. Analytical results demonstrate that a significant reduction in the transient swing can be obtained by balancing out early enough the power difference between the generation and the load after a critical disturbance, and proves the usefulness of this approach in reducing the loss of synchronism of synchronous machines in Power Grids heavily based on HVdc transmission schemes. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated on the Manitoba Hydro system and has been conceived as a part of a new Special Protection Scheme (SPS) based on phasor measurements. This novel Special Protection Scheme has been tested on the Manitoba Hydro and Venezuelan power grids.
