Abstract:

A +/- 800 kV, 6000 MW Multi-terminal HVDC project is being constructed at present in India from the North-Eastern Region to Agra. The aim of the project is to evacuate part of the hydro power from new generation being constructed in the North Eastern part of India to the main load centres in the Northern part of the country, especially near the National Capital Region around Delhi. This is by far the largest HVDC project in the world at present. The project comprises of 2 bipoles of 3000 MW each, with continuous overload rating of 33% thus requiring converter terminals each rated for 2000 MW per pole, technically it’s thus an HVDC scheme with 8000 MW capacity.

Powergrid the federal utility in India will be the owner & operator of the project and a Joint Venture of ABB and BHEL (an Indian power company) is the main contractor for the project.

The presentation intends to give an overall perspective and outline key features.
