IEEE Sections Congress 2011

2011_08_19_ieee

Date:

August 19-22, 2011

Location:

San Francisco Marriott Marquis, in San Francisco, California, USA.

Abstract:

Sections Congress is the a triennial gathering of Section leadership, sponsored by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board. It is the opportunity for IEEE representatives from all over the world to participate in an event which provides them with the tools which will assist their unit in focusing their activities solely on the member and increase members’ participation in IEEE activities. Sections Congress is focused on meeting the expectations of Section leaders by providing them with an opportunity to network, receive training, and provide input into IEEE programs and projects.

The primary audience for IEEE Sections Congress is IEEE members who are volunteering within the MGA structure (Region, geographic Councils, Section, Subsection, Chapter, and Affinity Group), but volunteers from other IEEE units are encouraged to attend as well.

The Winnipeg Section will be represented by the Vice Chair, Andrew Roncin, and the Secretary, Jordan Hiebert.

Tips for Publications and Conferences

2011_01_22_tips

The IEEE Robotics and Control chapter and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Manitoba identified two papers to help students and young academics improve their skills.

Successfully Presenting Your Research at Conferences and Competitions

Your research, as groundbreaking as it might be, heavily relies upon its presentation. This guide will give you a few pointers on what you can do to successfully present research papers and posters at conferences and competitions. All negative stereotypes commonly associated with engineering have become obsolete. Modern engineers are expected to develop advanced social, communication, presentation, and leadership.

Surviving the Review Process

The purpose of this article is to provide some insight into the peer-review process used by many technical journals and to give a bit of advice about revision and resubmission of a paper that was not accepted after the first round of reviews. For young authors, the review process can be mysterious and frustrating. Criticisms conveyed in anonymous reviews may feel like personal attacks, while terse or vague comments may seem to provide little guidance for revision. This article provides a set of practical guidelines that can help you succeed in publishing good research. This includes a brief overview of the review process, as well as some hints about interpreting reviews, and suggestions for preparing a response to the reviews. The opinions below have evolved over several years, through numerous interactions with authors, reviewers, and members of editorial boards. They are meant only to convey practical hints for success and not as value judgments about the process. Finally, they represent only one viewpoint. Newcomers to the process would do well to solicit the advice and opinions of a variety of senior researchers.

Fly-By-Wireless Workshop

Fly-By-Wireless Workshop

Date:

August 24-27, 2010.

Location:

University of Maine, Orono, Maine, USA.

Abstract:

2010 International CANEUS Fly By Wireless Workshop is a unique opportunity for academics, industry leaders and small businesses with interest in Aerospace, Wireless, and Nanotechnology to partner with big players such
as Boeing, Lockheed, GE, NASA, Canadian and European Space agencies.

This workshop is sponsored by CANEUS, IEEE Region-1 (Northeast USA), IEEE Region-7 (Canada), IEEE Montreal Section, IEEE Maine Section, WiSe-Net Lab, NASA, MSGC and the following IEEE COMSOC Technical Committees: Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks, Communications Switching & Routing, Tactical Communications & Operations, and Wireless Communications Committees. Tech co-sponsorship by IEEE COMSOC, AES, and UFFC societies are pending approval.

2010 CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Workshop will bring together leaders from aerospace industry, academia, and government agencies, to discuss recent advances in wireless communications focused on applications in aerospace industry. The workshop will be hosted by the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, USA, on August 24-27, 2010. The Workshop remains a unique forum for wireless technology providers and end-users to discuss aerospace roadmap for future research and development and form meaningful partnerships. New innovations such as battery-free wireless sensor systems, reliable multi-tier wireless networks, and high temperature sensors will be highlighted at the workshop. Ultimately, this effort will contribute to minimizing cables and connectors across the aerospace industry by providing more reliable and higher performance wireless alternatives at lower cost.

The 2010 CANEUS FWB Workshop, third of its kind, builds on the successes from the 1st Joint CANEUS/NASA 2007 “Fly-by-Wireless” Workshop, held in March 2007 at Grapevine, Texas and the 2nd CANEUS “Fly-by-Wireless” Workshop held in June 2009 at Montreal, Canada. The first CANEUS/NASA FBW workshop grew out of an identified need from the CANEUS 2006 Aerospace End-User Committee on SHM – Structural Health Monitoring held at Toulouse. Organizations from the Americas, Europe and Asia regions, attending CANEUS workshops, have taken concrete steps to continue development of their wireless programs and also establish successful collaborative projects, e.g. Wi-Testbed, Frequecy Spectrum, Wi-Engine, Wi-SHM, Wi-Sense, and others.

Paper Submission:

Optional Paper Submission (Not required for attendance).  Original papers in the area of wireless communications with applications in aerospace industry may be submitted in an extended summary format (2 pages, Font 12, double column, IEEE Format) with sufficient details to allow a critical review. The paper submission deadline is 5:00PM EDT, July 30, 2010. Papers shall be submitted using the EDAS paper submission system to one of the two “application end user” or “technology developer” categories.

Registration:

For more info and registration please visit workshop website http://www.caneus.org/fbw10. Deadline for early registration is July 30, 2010, 5:00pm EST. Registration Fee is $150 and includes 3 lunches, one dinner and all morning and afternoon breaks plus paper abstracts and presentations on a CD . The registration fee will increase to $250 after July 30, 2010 and will close on August 14 or when the limit of 250 attendees is reached, whichever comes first. IEEE Members will receive a $50 rebate on their registration at the event. Professional Engineers will receive (28 hours of PDH/CEU) for attending.
