IEEE Entrepreneurs’ Networks have been formed in several locations. The Networks share information, publish newsletters, hold meetings with invited speakers, and provide an excellent opportunity to “network.” Established Networks include Boston (Mass.) Area, Connecticut, Orange County/Los Angeles (Calif.) Area, San Francisco Area.

IEEE Employment Network.  As a part of a campaign to assist unemployed IEEE members to improve their job search efforts IEEE-USA has offered PACE grants to any IEEE Section in Regions 1-6 that want to start an Employment Network.  In 2012, IEEE-USA awarded a grant to the IEEE WNC Section to start Employment Network. For more information, contact Charles Lord at c.j.lord@ieee.org.

IEEE WNC Section and IEEE WNC LCN Presents

Perspectives on Inventing

by
Jack Mandelman, Ph.D.E.E., Life Senior IEEE Member
Thursday, February 2, 2012
7:00 PM, Asiana Restaurant, Hendersonville Rd. Asheville
This is a dinner meeting (required) beginning at 5:30 PM.
The cost is $14.61 including drink, taxes, and gratuity.

If necessity is the mother of invention, then the father has to be Jack Mandelman.  Dr. Mandelman often has been considered to be a living legend, by engineers and scientists who worked with him in the field of semiconductor technology.  According to Jack, “Problems are golden opportunities for solutions which are inventions.”  He has also found that “Most productive inventing is done in the team environment.”  “To be a successful inventor, you can’t be a loner.”  “Although inventing involves a great deal of creativity, most successful inventing comes from really hard work.”

Most of Jack’s 30+ years experience in the field of semiconductor technology R & D was with IBM in Essex Junction, VT, East Fishkill, NY and Rochester, MN as an engineer/scientist.  Over that time period, he contributed to the staggering greater than 100,000 fold increase in the number of transistors packed on a chip of silicon.   A major portion of his work involved application of numerical modeling to device design and process integration of advanced DRAM and logic silicon technologies.  He also served as an IBM Senior Business Council member for the support of intellectual property development, prosecution and litigation.

Dr. Mandelman has over 470 issued US patents to his name, and has received corporate recognition as leading inventor at IBM.  His contributions to the understanding of, and innovations for the mitigation of, previously unrecognized challenges to the advancement of semiconductor technology led to many patented inventions.  Areas of significance include Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) and Shallow-Trench-Isolation (STI) technologies.   He received an IBM Burlington Laboratory Excellence award (1989) for critical contributions to the 16Mb DRAM program.

From 1992 to 2002 Dr. Mandelman was IBM’s lead engineer for the design of storage arrays in advanced DRAM chips, in a multinational alliance among IBM, Infineon and Toshiba at IBM’s Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center in East Fishkill, NY.  All-good chips for the world’s fastest and densest 256Mb DRAM were produced in 1995, only 3 years after the commencement of the alliance.  His work ultimately led to 1Gb DRAM chips employing paradigm shifting vertical transistors.

Dr. Mandelman is coming to the IEEE WNC meeting to share his inventing “secrets!”  He will present an overview of the inventing process, and ingredients he believes to be essential for prolific inventing.  A portion of the time will be dedicated to Q & A. This is a great opportunity for new and experienced inventors alike to learn techniques for prolific inventing. Please don’t miss it!

Here are the links to the PowerPoint and MP3 from Jack’s presentation:
