Leadership Position Descriptions

Training is available for all positions locally via the Section and online from IEEE at https://ieee-elearning.org/CLE/.


Section Chair:

  • Knows about: IEEE Bylaws; IEEE Policies; MGA Operations Manual.
  • Presides over meetings.
  • Works with ExCom, Committees, Chapters, and Affinity Group Chairs to support activities.
  • Represents Section at Region meetings.
  • Is a signer on bank account.

Section Vice Chair:

  • Presides over meetings in absence of Chair.
  • Is familiar with the policies relating to the activity of the Section and subunits, including IEEE Bylaws, IEEE Policies, MGA Operations Manual.
  • Assumes additional authority or activity as designated by Chair.

Section Treasurer:

  • Prepares the annual budget.
  • Records all financial activity.
  • Reconciles bank statements/activity.
  • Reports status of unit’s finances to the Section ExCom on a regular basis.
  • Prepares and submits Annual Financial Report (L-50).
  • Is a signer on bank account.

Section Secretary:

  • Records minutes of ExCom and other Section meetings.
  • Handles correspondence.
  • Distributes meeting notices.
  • Maintains Section records
  • Submits officer and meeting reporting, including officer changes during the year, to IEEE Operations Center.

Administrative Chair/Webmaster:

  • Sends WNC Section weekly email & calendar updates.
  • Posts WNC website pages, advertisements, job notices, etc. to website.
  • Responds to Web requests from groups outside IEEE, forwarding to appropriate WNC Section volunteer as required

Awards and Recognition:

  • Assists with Section Award & Recognition programs.

Past Chair:

  • Provides guidance, recommendations.

Membership Development Chair:

  • Welcomes new Section Members.
  • Coordinates membership exhibits for local meetings and conferences, job fairs, etc.
  • Coordinates Senior Membership Upgrade Events.
  • Identifies membership problems and opportunities.

Professional Activities (PACE) Chair

  • PACE Chair Description
  • Organizes a Region 3 Student Branch Leadership Training Workshop as prescribed by new leadership.
  • Organizes WNC Professional Advancement and Career opportunities for Section members.

Educational Meeting Chair

  • Selects lecturer and topic.
  • Selects program of broad appeal such that members and targeted individuals find value in participating.
  • Schedules event in a venue of significance and with proper promotion.
  • Targets an audience that is mixture of Members, high schools, magnet programs, industry, and other professionals, and other IEEE Sections in North and South Carolina.

Industry Liaison:

  • Helps the Section to strengthen partnerships between the WNC Section and industry for mentorship, careers, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Represent industry at the IEEE WNC Section Executive Committee meetings.
  • Presents monthly activity reports to the IEEE WNC Section.

University Liaison:

  • Strengthens partnership between student members, Student Branches, and Society Branch Chapters in the WNC Section.
  • Provides support and resources for success of student members and student branches.
  • Encourages student members to involve themselves in various IEEE activities including technical and professional development.
  • Represent colleges/universities at the IEEE WNC  Section Executive Committee meetings.
  • Present monthly activity reports to the IEEE WNC Section

Government Liaison:

  • Strengthens partnership between the Section and governments at all levels in the WNC Section.
  • Provides support and resources for success of the partnership.
  • Encourages government members to involve themselves in various IEEE activities including technical and professional development.
  • Represent governments at the IEEE WNC Section Executive Committee meetings.
  • Present monthly activity reports to the IEEE WNC Section.

Young Professionals Chapter

Officers: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer.

  • Work with members to ensure each has a mentor and has setup his/her myIEEE Profile.
  • Work with members to ensure each is successfully making IEEE WNC his/her Professional Home.
  • Help the Section to strengthen partnerships between the WNC Section and industry for mentorship, careers, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Invite members to present at Section meetings.
  • Represent the Chapter at the IEEE WNC Section Executive Committee meetings.
  • Represent the Chapter at at least one IEEE conference each year, as determined by the group.
  • Present monthly activity reports to the IEEE WNC Section.
  • Present monthly financial reports to the IEEE WNC Section.
  • Appoint one member to serve on the IEEE WNC Section Professional Activities Committee.
  • If the Chapter Chair cannot attend meetings, he/she is responsible for insuring that another Chapter officer attends in his/her place.
  • Hold at least four meetings per year -one per quarter.
  • File meeting reports (IEEE L31) for all chapter meetings
  • File chapter officer nominations with the Section Chair.
  • Work with the Section Administrative Chair/Webmaster, by the deadline, to help maintain your webpages on the Section’s website.
  • Ensure your Chapter is working and listening to its members.

Women In Engineering Chapter

  • Officers: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer
